Grand Tour

Grand Tour Recital Program

About Grand Tour Recital Program

Grand Tour springs from two sources: the close collaborative relationship between Honstein and Larson, and the seductive influence of Venice, a city where romantic visions of the past clash with the present in beautiful and surprising ways.

Armed with a commission from Larson, Honstein lived in Venice for a summer, exploring the city’s alleys and thoroughfares, canals and lagoons, while also confronting the strange tension between its ancient history and modern role as a manic mecca for international tourism.

Honstein’s Grand Tour evokes an average day in his Venetian summer:  an early morning walk through labyrinthine streets, the crush of crowds and vendors, the desperate race to stay one step ahead of giant tour groups, the dramatic passage of massive cruise ships through the lagoon, a traditional evening passeggiata, a storm quickly passing through, and a languid late night walk home.

For this recital program, Larson pairs Grand Tour with works inspired Venice, the sea and travel. From works by Venetian renaissance master Claudio Merulo to Liszt’s romantic evocation of Venetian boat songs, Ravel’s coloristic expression of a ship at sea to Salvatorre Sciarrino’s 20th century representation of a fragile maritime city, the program evokes the unique beauty of Venice drawing connections between music from the past to the present.
